NUTRIENT INTAKE GUIDELINES

The following recommendations provide guidance on daily vitamin and mineral intake to help you make informed decisions about your supplement regimen. These guidelines are based on data from the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Science. They include the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs), which meet the nutritional needs of nearly all healthy individuals in specific age and gender groups, as well as the Upper Tolerable Intake Levels (ULs), which indicate the maximum daily amount of a nutrient considered safe. Daily Values (DVs) are also provided to help you understand nutrient content in the context of a total daily diet.

ESSENTIAL OIL DILUTION

When using essential oils, it's crucial to follow safety guidelines to prevent skin sensitivity and ensure proper application. Always dilute essential oils in a carrier oil, especially for age-specific ratios. Avoid using oils at dilutions higher than 5% on large skin areas, and up to 10% for localized use. Sensitive areas like eyes, nose, and ears should be avoided, particularly with "hot oils." Before broader use, perform a patch test on a small area and wait 30 minutes to check for adverse reactions. Follow the manufacturer's instructions, especially for oils requiring UV light precautions, and ensure child safety by keeping oils out of reach.

OIL BLENDING

Before applying them to the skin, make sure to familiarize yourself with some very important rules that will help you do it safely and avoid unnecessary health complications. A dilution in a carrier oil is meant to reduce skin sensitivity. Note that the dilution recommendations vary per age group. Make sure to check the approved dilution ratio for each age group before applying essential oils. Be aware that they should not be applied topically to large areas of skin at dilutions higher than 5%. 10% dilutions should only be used for acute and localized applications. Do not apply any essential oils to areas of your skin that are considered very sensitive, such as the eyes, nose, and ears, or to damaged, cut, or wounded skin. It is especially important for those essences that are classified as "hot oils". Before applying any of the plant extracts topically to a larger area of your skin, make sure you won't experience any allergic reactions. On the skin of your wrist, test the oil first, and then watch it for 30 minutes. You can use it safely if no unfavorable changes occur. The manufacturer may have provided specific usage instructions for some of the oils. Essences extracted from citrus fruits, for instance, are subject to limitations regarding UV light exposure. Make sure to read the label. It is better to start the topical application of essential oils with a smaller dilution ratio in a carrier oil and work your way up. In order to achieve the desired level of overall dilution with the carrier oil, you will need to adjust the number of drops that you use of each essential oil when you combine multiple oils. As a result, to blend multiple essential oils, divide the number of drops necessary [1, 2, 6, 10, etc.] for the dilution of the essential oil by the total number of oils you want to blend. If you blend two essential oils together and can use 8 drops for the dilution, make sure to use 4 drops of each oil and combine them with a carrier oil. Essential oils are not safe for children to use unattended. Ref: Tisserand, R. & Young, R.. (2013). Essential Oil Safety: A Guide for Health Care Professionals: Second Edition.
